SPACED REPETITION:

The most powerful and stress free way to remember things long term is to follow this formula. You can compress or expand the time frames, keeping the ratio about the same.
Here is an example:
Let’s say you want to remember the 20 largest cities in the world by population.

Take a look at the cities for a couple of minutes, with the idea that you want to remember them (in order).

Put the paper down or look away from the screen. See how many cities you can recall. Perhaps you remember 10. Great! Now take another look at the list, and show a nice emotional reaction to the ones you miss (especially if there’s some reason you should have remembered one, like you were there last month!)

Now let some time go by- a few hours. See how many cities you can remember, then look at the list. Again, make a light hearted fuss over the ones you did not recall. (Oh, Beijing! How could I POSSIBLY have forgotten Beijing!”) There’s a smile on your face.

Now repeat this tomorrow.

And the next day.

Now skip a day.

Now skip 3 days and go to once a day.

Now go to a week.

Stay at a week for 3 times.

Go to 2 weeks for 2 times.

Go to a month. Stay with a month for 3 times.

It’s permanent!

The ones you missed at the beginning will be amongst the strongest ones at the end. That’s because of the (positive) emotion associated with them.

All in all, you only spent about 30 to 40 minutes or so. Had you spent that 40 minutes all at once on day ONE, you would have forgotten most of them a few weeks later. It’s NOT the total amount of study- it’s the space in between!
